1.6.2 Mangamate Waterfall Visitor Facilities - Project
Our Mangamate waterfall is a favorite place for both local and visitors alike. Thanks to DOC for finding the funding to help us re-develop this area to provide better facilities for the many day trippers and others who bring their families to camp under the trees beside the Whirinaki.
This includes removal of the Hawthorn trees, Blackberry and other noxious weeds, replacing them over time with native trees, arranged to shelter a range of level and private camping sites and BBQ tables along the river bank.
Two platforms are provided to allow fishing by people in Wheelchairs. A visitor shelter is being provided with water and benches. Toilet facilities are already in place. Further work on planting the the roadway down to the river is planned under our community's Whirinaki Restoration Project Stage A. This will also be a destination that our new Information Kiosk on the main road will point travelers to; as a break from the winding and dusty road to Waikaremoana. VIDEOCLIP AVAILABLE - click here Outcomes expected: An even better visitor experience in Whirinaki, attracting visitors who treasure the nature they find here. Start Date: Sept 08 Budget: Nominal Project Leader: Earl Rewi - DOC Programme Manager working with a local team supervised by William Eketone. Project Team: Issues Register:
